- It was only about a month ago that someone called-in three bomb threats, at Maitland Jewish Community Center - or JCC.
"We've never seen such a period of concentrated threats against the Jewish community", New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday at a news conference with Jewish leaders in Staten Island, where he and New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill vowed to prosecute the people making the threats. In addition, a temple in Rhode Island was evacuated after receiving a bomb threat.
Evan Bernstein, (L) the Anti-Defamation League's NY regional director, and Oren Segal, (R) director of the ADL's Center on Extremism speak during a news conference regarding a former journalist for making bomb threats, in NY, U.S., March 3, 2017.
"Four ADL offices in Atlanta, Boston, New York and Washington D.C. received telephoned bomb threats today". On Monday, Booker and Rep. Donald Norcross (D-1st Dist.) joined a similar rally in Cherry Hill, where bomb threats also were phoned into the local Jewish community center there. The Jewish Community Center in the Milwaukee suburb of Whitefish Bay was closed for nearly two hours. The center's director says it's about time the Feds took steps to end the threats and intimidation.
According to its website, the league was founded in 1913 "to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all".
The national headquarters in Manhattan were voluntarily evacuated out of precaution, reported NBC New York. "Our staff, our volunteers, our administrators have been prepared". We encourage community institutions to follow existing security procedures, call 911 immediately should they witness suspicious activity, and reach out to CIJA's security team for follow-up support. We're going to be here periodically and we want you to know there's nothing you need to be afraid of. At least 100 threats have been made over the past five waves of such incidents.
So far in 2017 there have been about 100 threats made against JCCs and Jewish day schools in the majority of states across the country.
Brighton Police are working with the Monroe County Sheriff's department and the FBI to investigate the local case. "We will work with the Federal Bureau of Investigation to see if this was a similar type threat".
Trump finally condemned the wave of threats against JCCs and the destruction of Jewish cemeteries in his address to the joint session of Congress on February 21, but has yet to take any definitive action to deter or address the disturbing spike in hate crimes. "These cowardly acts aim to create an atmosphere of fear and disrupt the important programs and services offered by JCCs to everyone in the communities they serve, including in our states". "Isn't it time to do something to protect them?"
