Panthers re-sign Charles Johnson to two-year deal

The Panthers also have extended a contract offer to restricted free agent guard Andrew Norwell to retain his rights for next season and re-signed safety Colin Jones and wide receiver Brenton Bersin.

Jones was selected with the No. 190 overall pick in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the 49ers.

Both players are now unrestricted free agents, but it will not be surprising if they re-sign in Carolina for less than the $1.797 million the low tender would have paid. He's second in franchise history with 67.5 sacks. I want to be at that high level that I've played at. "I'll give you my blood, sweat and tears".

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in a release Tuesday that it was great to have Johnson back. He re-signed with the Panthers for a one-year, $3 million deal in an effort to prove he wasn't washed up.

C Tyler Larsen: The former landscaper impressed the Panthers when he started the final five games of 2016 for injured centers Ryan Kalil and Gino Gradkowski. The Panthers could save $7.567 million toward the cap over the next two years if they cut ties with Lee, but it's hard to see them giving up on a three-time Pro Bowler who cost them a fourth-round pick. The 30-year-old finished with four takedowns over 13 games last season and ranked behind just Kony Ealy for team snaps from the end position.

Johnson played three seasons alongside the future Hall of Fame pass rusher, and a return to Carolina would seem fitting for the National Football League fifth-leading sack artist all-time. "He has spent his entire career with the Panthers, has emerged as a leader for us in the last few years, and is a big part of the reason we've had the success we've had".
