Tensions have been high since a year ago, when the North conducted two underground nuclear explosions and test-launched some two-dozen missiles. The U.S. already has other THAAD systems active in Hawaii and Guam to protect against threats from North Korea.
The U.S. and South Korea first announced the deployment of a THAAD system in the latter last July, a move which drew quick condemnation from China. These are in violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions.
North Korea has launched an unidentified missile, which fell into the Sea of Japan, South Korea says.
