DEVELOPING: North Korea Fires 4 Ballistic Missiles Into Ocean, Officials Say

"We will resolutely honor our alliance commitments to South Korea and stand ready to defend ourselves, the American homeland, and our allies".

Amid growing tension in the Korean peninsula, China proposed on Wednesday that North Korea could suspend its nuclear and missile activities in exchange for a halt of the military drills held by the USA and South Korea.

In his New Year address, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said his nation was nearly ready to test-fire an intercontinental ballistic missile.

The planned installation of the USA anti-missile defence system has led to a diplomatic standoff between China and South Korea.

The danger of nuclear tests and ballistic missile launches has reached a new level, according to the resolution.

Japanese officials said three of the four missiles landed in the 200-nautical-mile offshore area where Tokyo has sovereign rights for exploring and exploiting resources.

"Repeated launches by North Korea are a serious, provocative action in terms of security and clearly violate United Nations security council resolutions".

Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully has condemned the firing of missiles by North Korea. As sanctions by the U.S. against North Korea have increased, he has vowed to develop a intercontinental ballistic missile that can deploy a nuclear weapon to the US.

The US and Japan have also requested a UN Security Council meeting on North Korea's tests.

A South Korean military official said the latest launch, which took place at 7.36am local time Monday, was being investigated to determine the type of the projectile used.

North Korea fired four ballistic missiles off the coast of Japan on Monday in an apparent protest against ongoing U.S.

The North Korean government has threatened to conduct more missile tests in response to the annual two-month exercises between the United States and South Korea, which are under way through April.

South Korea's political calendar was also not an issue, they said, referring to the Constitutional Court's upcoming ruling in the impeachment trial of President Park Geun-hye.

The U.S.is not the only country North Korea is attempting to threaten.

China has called on the USA and Japan to show great care, as the technology has some experts saying that it will break the global strategic balance and trigger an arms race.

Studying the photos provided by North Korea, analysts at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies deduced that the missiles were extended-range Scuds.
