Burkhall 2-7 0-0 5, Buckley 2-7 4-4 9, Carleton 2-11 2-2 6, Durr 7-22 2-3 21, Johnson 5-11 0-0 12, Bowe 6-14 1-1 13, Starks 0-0 1-2 1, Totals 24-72 10-12 67. Miles Jr. matched his career-high with 23 points in leading the Mountaineers to an 87-76 victory.
Earl Hall at 133 pounds and Lelund Weatherspoon at 174 pounds lead the Cyclones into the postseason - Weatherspoon won a conference title last season and helped the team to a third-place finish.
The Mountaineers (24-7, 16-2 Big 12) dominated inside, out-rebounding the Cyclones (20-10, 12-6) 48-29 and scoring 40 points in the paint to ISU's 12.
The Mountaineers were led in scoring by junior guard Daxter Miles, matching a career high, with 23 points and 7 rebounds off the bench, while Adrian scored 16 points and grabbed 7 boards. "We tried to emphasize it more". The Cyclones would rally to close the gap at 28 a piece with just over five minutes left in the first half as the fast paced continued.
Baylor's Manu Lecomte was awarded as the Newcomer of the Year, while Kansas' Bill Self scored Coach of the Year honors. We've got to get him going, but he's got to help.
Monte Morris is a first-team all-conference selection.
"Theoretically, in most leagues (the 2 seed) is an easier route to the championship, but in this league I don't think it really matters", Huggins said.
Then, after Iowa State countered with a Matt Thomas triple, Adrian made a jumper, turned a steal into a layup, then knocked two free throws home.
"Teammates were just finding me, man".
"I wish coach Mittie was on the committee", Fennelly said.
"I thought maybe after he got a couple of points in the Texas Tech game, it might spur him", Huggins said of Miles capitalizing on second-chance opportunities, referring to two key stick-backs in that win over the Red Raiders. We've played well down the stretch.
WVU went up eight at 50-42 on an Adrian lay-in with 17:41 left, but saw that advantage go down to two points at 53-51 thanks to 3s by Burton and Thomas.
Both teams had gotten to that point in different way: The Cyclones made nine first-half 3s, five by Mitrou-Long, while WVU held a 25-13 advantage on the glass and had converted 13 second-chance points to ISU's three.
"I kind of think about it like when you play the old Mortal Kombat", Moreno said. "I think if you compare us to other teams, I think we've earned that but, again, that's a choice someone else will make".
"They just wear you down and it showed at the start of the second half when they got a lot of transition buckets on us".
"When we came in it was tough because for one, we were freshmen and Huggs was really determined to turn this season around". "If we dwell on it, then what does that have to say about the rest of our season?" "Senior Night is great and everything, but getting that two seed was more important to us (the seniors)".
"We've got to focus". The highlight of his career was 10-point effort against Manhattan back in November, hitting two of his three attempts from long range.
