Women in Hyderabad fight for their rights after being divorced by WhatsApp

As the husband is in the USA, the police would take legal opinion to take action for sending Talaq messages. The police acted on the complaint lodged by the brothers' wives who stated that after they received the talaq messages, the in-laws threw them out of the house five days ago and assaulted them when they resisted the eviction.

The Hyderabad Police arrested the parents of two US-based brothers who sent "talaq" messages on Whatsapp, for assaulting their daughter-in-laws when they refused to leave their house. Then both brothers put triple talaq as their status and display photo on Whatsapp. "A few days ago, Aqueel had sent a text message on WhatsApp to his wife Noor stating talaq thrice", South zone DCP V. Satyanarayana told The Hindu.

Police said that the two brothers Abdul Sohail and Abdul Aqeel had gone to NY previous year after getting jobs in a private company.

The two women, who staged a protest outside their in-laws' house, tried to enter the house but were pushed out by their father-in-law Hafeez.

In Delhi last week, a woman moved court against her "divorce" over WhatsApp. Abdul Aqil married Mehreen Noor in 2015 and have one child. "Doesn't Sharia law ask you to take care of your children?"

"The victim says she did not receive any divorce papers from her husband. Now, without citing any reason, he has sent me divorce". Ms. Fathima had lodged a complaint with the police and a criminal case was registered but the investigation could not be carried out as her husband was overseas. "They have made marriage into a joke".

Three members of a family were arrested today for allegedly attacking their daughter-in-law, police said here.

Several women have filed a petition before the Supreme Court regarding such similar cases seeking the quashing of the triple talaq practice.

The Centre has given its opinion against triple talaq saying that religious practices can not override the rights of women.

But cases of triple talaq have been coming in from various parts of the country.
