After news broke that Attorney General Jeff Sessions met the Russian ambassador twice past year but did not mention either meeting during his confirmation hearings when asked about contacts between Trump surrogates and Russians, Schumer wrote, "The bottom line is we have an obligation to get to the truth". Lukoil is one of the largest oil companies in Russian Federation.
"Jeff Sessions is an honest man".
Trump tweeted the image after it appeared in a Reddit thread Thursday and was shared by a number of conservative pundits, including an editor-at-large for Infowars.com, a site that promotes conspiracy theories.
That has led Schumer - and other Democratic lawmakers - to call on Sessions to resign.
U.S. President Donald Trump is calling for an investigation into Democratic politicians Charles Schumer and Nancy Pelosi and what he has called their "ties" to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The image shows Schumer and Putin in NY in 2003, a trip which also saw the Russian premier meet President George W Bush at Camp David.
In a response to the president's tweet, Schumer wrote that he would "happily talk" about his contact with Putin, which "took place in '03 in full view of (the) press & (the) public under oath".
Another aide has admitted that then-candidate Trump insisted on removing an anti-Russia plank from the Republican platform.
Meanwhile, we're also learning Jared Kushner, the President's son-in-law and senior adviser is among a growing list of Trump associates who met with the Russian ambassador.
In Trump's first month in power, his national security adviser, Michael Flynn, was forced to resign after disclosures that he had been in frequent contact with Sergei Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the USA, including the day that president Barack Obama expelled 35 Russian diplomats over Russia's hacking of the election.
The official called the sit-down at Trump Tower in NY a "brief courtesy meeting".
Schumer said he'd be happy to have a public discussion to hash out their respective ties - or lack thereof - to Russian Federation.
Alleged Russian ties with US officials in the Trump administration has been a hot topic in the US media, with Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak in the headlines. I appreciate we had a long briefing and testimony from the director today, but in order for us to do our investigation in a thorough and credible way, we're gonna need the FBI to fully cooperate, to be willing to tell us the length and breadth of any counterintelligence investigations they are conducting.
"We should start an immediate investigation into @SenSchumer and his ties to Russian Federation and Putin", Trump tweeted.
