PDP died the day Ahmadu Ali and I left - Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday called on Nigerians to pray fervently for the country, so that despite its multifarious challenges, it would not "sink like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has sunk".

The former president who featured on Liberty Radio Kaduna's interview programme, Guest of the Week; said he was raised in a community where Christians and Muslims co-existed peacefully and he had lived with that all his life.

"For us in the PDP, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo remains a leader and a president Nigerians will continue to remember for his unique style and quality of leadership, the fulcrum for his policy formulations and implementations; and the ingenuity with which he pioneered the affairs of the country creditably on the platform of our great party, the PDP, from 1999 to 2007 and even after leaving office. If the leaders also behave childishly, that is a calamity for that country and for Africa", he said.

Obasanjo said this at the display of 40 African traditional drums in his honour to celebrate his 80th birthday celebration.

The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library has been officially opened on Saturday, in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

"I brought Ahamdu Ali as the national leader of the party".

The library houses over 42 million books, documents and archival materials including the former presidents primary school uniform, shoes, military uniform, his first auto and other personal belongings. "There is no human being in Africa that has experienced what Obasanjo has gone through in the last 50 years".

Mr. Obasanjo stated this on Saturday at the commissioning of the library, which was part of activities marking his 80th birthday held in Abeokuta.

Mr. ‎Obasanjo said the library was the fulfilment of the vision he had in 1988 to collect vital materials of the civil war (1967-1970).

Mr. Obasanjo also commended ex-military head of state, Abdulsalam Abubakar, who released him from prison.

She said the library would help the youth to know the way of the former President and learn from them.
