Iran and Azerbaijan to join railways as part of freight route

Stressing that the Islamic Republic of Iran attaches great weight to its relations with neighbouring countries, President Rouhani said: "The Republic of Azerbaijan has a special place in this regard".

Esmaeili said unique opportunities for cooperation between Iran and Azerbaijan have been created over the past three years following adoption of policies by President Hassan Rouhani's administration to expand cooperation and establish friendly ties with neighboring and Islamic countries.

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan and Iran signed intergovernmental documents within the framework of the official visit of President Ilham Aliyev to Iran.

Before the presser and after a meeting between high-ranking delegations of the two countries, the two sides' officials signed two memorandums of understanding on fighting money laundering and expanding railroad links.

Iran and neighboring Azerbaijan agreed on Sunday to work towards completing their portion of a planned freight railway route from Europe to South Asia, Iranian state media reported.

The ship, road and rail route connects India's Mumbai to the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas and further to Baku in Azerbaijan as well as Astrakhan, Moscow and St Petersburg in Russian Federation before stretching to northern Europe and Scandinavia.

Iran and Azerbaijan have common views in most regional and worldwide issues, said Rouhani adding: "We consider terrorism a great danger to the region and we believe that it will not be resolved through military ways, but rather its ideas must be eradicated".

The president said Iran is ready to swap oil and oil products with Azerbaijan.

On Sunday meeting, both presidents discussed environmental issues in the Caspian Sea and the fulfillment of agreements reached by the Caspian littoral countries on marine environment.

According to IRNA, they also stressed the importance of Iran-Azerbaijan-Russia, Iran-Azerbaijan-Turkey and Iran-Azerbaijan-Georgia trilateral cooperation formula.

"Over the recent years, the presidents of Iran and Azerbaijan have met eight times".

Iran's president also underlined the development of cooperation between the two countries in the automotive industry.
