Tyron Woodley (left) and Stephen Thompson react to the decision after their UFC 205 fight.
Other fights on the card are Mark Hunt vs. Alistair Overeem, Rashad Evans vs. Daniel Kelly, Lando Vannata vs. David Teymur, and the interesting scrap between two undefeated fighters Paul Craig and Tyson Pedro. Of course they do, they are fighters.
Woodley won 48-47 on two scorecards, with the third a 47-47 draw.
It's going to be a controversial finish as it's hard to see how Woodley took three out of five rounds, but with the fifth round near-finish it's hard to argue that Woodley didn't deserve to win the fight in spirit, if not exactly on the judges' scorecards.
Stephen Thompson's second attempt at claiming the UFC welterweight title ended in heartbreak.
Meanwhile, one of the most anticipated lightweight matches will take place at the same event when Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson fight for the interim lightweight strap.
UFC 209 will be held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, March 4, at 10 p.m. ET. Thompson targeted Woodley's body in the second half of the round and finished the frame strong.
With under one minute left in the bout, Woodley pushed forward with two overhand rights, the second of which floored Thompson.
"To fight the best - he's the champion - I had to play it smart". Woodley wins via majority decision. "I ate a couple shots trying to get in close and it just kept me a little cautious". "So therefore, I'm just going to continue to get the contracts, sign the contracts and get the W. At the end of the day, as long as I keep fighting and winning, you're not going to be able to deny me". We were looking to do more taking down.
Woodley has verbally sparred with White in recent weeks, with the champ suggesting he has been treated poorly by the UFC - and White responding by labeling Woodley "a bit of a drama queen". The fight of the night's high-tension action mirrored the earlier pay-per-view contests.
However, the fight didn't pan out that way, with Kelly putting on the most impressive performance of his UFC stint to earn a spilt-decision victory. Lando Vannata (156) of the U.S. is going up against David Teymur (156) of Sweden. Sometimes you watch the fight, you watch with emotion. The main card airs tonight live on PPV, starting at 10PM ET. He tenderized Hunt's midsection with knees and mixed in standing elbows upstairs. Cynthia Calvillo made the most of her Octagon debut, forcing a stylish rear-naked choke submission in the opening round against Amanda Cooper.
UFC will return to pay-per-view action on 8 April in Buffalo, New York, with a light heavyweight title bout featuring defending champion Daniel Cormier and the unsafe Anthony Johnson.
In the first fight on the main card, Alistair Overeem destroyed UFC veteran Mark Hunt with a brutal knee knock-out.
