Trump's Joint Session, Sessions And Russia, Oscars Flub

"And when you're asked about your contacts with Russians in the Senate, that should have been disclosed".

Nevertheless, after reviewing ethics rules for his office, he said: "I have chose to recuse myself from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns for president of the United States".

Questions have hovered about whether Sessions talked about the campaign with the ambassador.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a news conference Thursday he often meets with ambassadors and foreign leaders in his role as a senator.

Mr Sessions is under fire after it emerged he had met Russia's ambassador during the election - despite telling his confirmation hearing he had "no communications with the Russians".

Carlson said Cicilline was "getting a little ahead of the story" by floating perjury charges against Sessions, after he was found to have had two meetings with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak at the same time he was a surrogate for the Donald Trump campaign. "He could have stated his response more accurately, but it was clearly not intentional", Trump said, CNN reports.

"It is deeply alarming that Attorney General Sessions would lie under oath especially concerning his dealings with the Russian Ambassador, as both Republicans and Democrats have called for investigations into the Trump Administration's ties to Moscow", said a statement from Brown.

Sessions on Thursday recused himself from any investigation into Russian meddling in America's 2016 presidential election. Earlier today in Virginia, Trump said he had "total" confidence in Sessions, "probably did" answer questions truthfully and didn't think Sessions should recuse himself.

"This announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation of the existence of any investigation, or suggestive of the scope of any such investigation", Sessions said in the statement.

Meetings between senators and diplomatic officials are, of course, common: Missouri senator Clare McCaskill, who attacked Sessions on Twitter for the sit-down, has in the past publicized multiple visits of her own with the Russian ambassador. A wide variety of congressional Democrats have called for Sessions' resignation given the contradictions between his sworn testimony and reality. That was at the height of what US intelligence officials say was a Russian hacking campaign to influence the November election in the Republican candidate's favour. Sessions told reporters he had done nothing wrong by failing to disclose the contact with Kislyak.

During the Senate confirmation process to become attorney general, Sessions denied contact with Russian officials during the campaign. "If Attorney General Sessions is the subject of an investigation, I believe it would be appropriate for him to recuse himself". And he hedged when asked about other potential Russian contacts.

Trump's White House has lobbied the FBI, reportedly the Central Intelligence Agency and two Republicans who head committees leading investigations into Russia's election meddling, to knock down media reports on the alleged links.

Revelations of sensitive contacts between the Trump team and Russian Federation have already caused one high-profile casualty for the incoming administration.

Democratic senators including Dianne Feinstein and Richard Blumenthal said in their letter that Sessions's decision to step back from campaign-related investigations was welcome.
