April has not given birth to her calf yet.
Zookeepers did not know that Kipele was expecting until recently because she was on birth control.
"It's not a ideal science because they don't develop giraffe birth control and lion birth control and hyena birth control, so you're using things that are for similar species, but not necessarily specific to an individual species", said Aucone. A NY petting zoo is sharing the joy as they are expecting a baby giraffe to be born.
Nearly 25 million patient and not-so-patient fans have logged on to a live YouTube stream to check on her progress, but many have been left disappointed at the lack of action. The zoo also warned fans of fake livestreams and websites selling giraffe-related merchandise. At birth, the calf measured 5 feet tall and weighed 73 pounds, which is on the smaller side for giraffes, according to zoo officials.
