"The Russian ambassador apparently sent a staffer to my office, I did not see him, and asked for a meeting, as so numerous other ambassadors were doing", Sessions said.
U.S. President Donald Trump accused Democrats late on Thursday of conducting a "witch-hunt" against Attorney General Jeff Sessions over contacts with Russian Federation, as the veteran senator recused himself from any probe into the election campaign.
Mr Sessions, a former U.S. senator, received Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak in his office in September, the Washington Post reported.
Russian officials dispute this characterization.
The developments follow allegations that Sessions - an early and prominent campaigner for Trump - met twice with the Russian ambassador in the midst of the campaign, yet had told the Senate judiciary committee under oath that he had not met with any Russian officials.
"This announcement should not be interpreted as confirmation of the existence of any investigation, or suggestive of the scope of any such investigation", Sessions said in the statement.
Leading Democratic lawmakers, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Massachusetts Sen.
Kislyak's potential proximity to Russian spying is one reason why Flynn's interactions with him, and Flynn's failure to disclose what he discussed with Kislyak, raised concerns among intelligence officials.
"If there were contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, they may be legitimate; they may be okay".
During the hearings, when asked what he would do if he learned a member of Trump's campaign had communicated with the Russian government over the course of the 2016 campaign, Sessions responded: "I'm not aware of any of those activities".
The Trump campaign has repeatedly denied communication with Russian officials during the 2016 elections and its transition to the White House.
Wanting to know the details of the Sessions saga, Democrats have also asked the Department of Justice inspector general to review Sessions' recusal.
As Attorney-General, Mr Sessions heads the Justice Department.
Despite Sessions' untruths during a Senate committee hearing in which he was asked about ongoing reports that Russian Federation was involved in some shady politics, President TrumPutin told reporters aboard an aircraft carrier in Virginia that he had "total" confidence in Sessions.
"Now Jeff Sessions is AG - the final say on the law enforcement investigation into ties between the Trump campaign & Russian Federation?"
"Several of the President-elect's nominees or senior advisers have Russian ties".
Attorney General Sessions must resign immediately. While his spokeswoman confirmed the meetings between the then-Senator and the Russian ambassador, she said in a statement, "There was absolutely nothing misleading about his answer [during his confirmation hearing]".
"I have said whenever it's appropriate, I will recuse myself".
Sessions, who was a major surrogate for Donald Trump's campaign and chairman of his national security advisory committee, is now the person overseeing the investigation into ties between Trump's campaign and Russian officials.
The 2003 photo was taken in NY, as Schumer welcomed Putin for an event commemorating Lukoil's first gas station in Manhattan, Gateway Pundit revealed.
"This situation was serious, as is evident by President Obama's call for a review - and as is evident by the United States response", Obama spokesman Eric Schultz said.
