The New York Times published a staggering report Wednesday evening on the Obama administration's extraordinary and extensive effort in the waning days of the Obama presidency to preserve and distribute intelligence it had uncovered on Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation.
"The president of the United States, naturally, works on American affairs, and our President [Vladimir] Putin works on Russian affairs", he said.
The investigation will also look at how the US responded to the cyberattacks and how best to protect against them in the future. It would also examine if classified information about the intelligence community's assessment of the hack was improperly disclosed.
"I appreciate we had a long briefing and testimony from the director today, but in order for us to do our investigation in a thorough and credible way, we're going to need the FBI to fully cooperate", added Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee.
The U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a former U.S. senator and early Trump booster, is facing growing calls to recuse himself from investigations into the Trump campaign's Russia links after he apparently withheld information from the Senate about his conversations with the Russian ambassador during the campaign.
Sessions said in a statement that he "never met with any Russian officials to discuss issues of the campaign".
Dan Coats will be at the epicenter Tuesday of the bitter squabble between President Trump and the US intelligence community, which the former senator from IN will lead if he is confirmed as director of national intelligence.
President Donald Trump's nominee for director of national intelligence said Tuesday he has been assured that he will be included in the White House's core national security advisors body.
The announcement from the House Intelligence Committee follows growing calls from Democratic lawmakers and a handful of Republicans to further probe connections between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.
The top lawmakers on the House Intelligence Committee laid out the scope of their investigation into Russia's interference in the USA election, which will include potential contacts between Trump allies and Moscow as well as us intelligence leaks.
The investigations are continuing and no wrongdoing has been found so far, but the revelations have prompted lawmakers to urge Congress to open an independent inquiry into the connections between the Trump administration and Russian Federation.
According to The Times' sources, the Obama officials waged the campaign out of fear that the Trump administration would cover up or destroy some of the information.
"I'm sure he can and will effectively lead" the Senate intelligence committee's investigation, Blunt said.
Schiff said the committee's investigation will go forward regardless, but it will be less credible to the American people if the FBI is not completely forthcoming. Although he was ambassador to Germany under President George W. Bush, Coats would be the first director of national intelligence who has not spent most of his career in the military, in intelligence agencies or as a diplomat.
Sessions spoke twice with Russia's ambassador to the US last year, The Washington Post reported Wednesday night.
