Torres Stable In Hospital After Horrific Head Injury

Fernando Torres is "stable and conscious" in hospital after suffering a bad head injury in Atletico Madrid's 1-1 draw with Deportivo on Thursday.

Torres was hit by the head of Deportivo midfielder Alex Bergantinos.

"[It] was such a hard knock. He'll spend the night in hospital and undergo more tests tomorrow", the club wrote.

Atletico had to play out seven minutes of stoppage time with 10 men as they had already made all three substitutions.

Torres crashed heavily to the turf, with his head slamming into the ground upon landing before players and medical staff rushed to his aide, the Guardian reported.

In a message posted on Twitter, Saul Niguez said: "Friend, hoping it was just a scare and see you soon".

"I hope to return very soon!".

That was later confirmed by the club, who revealed that the Spaniard was "stable and conscious" and that he would stay in hospital overnight.

He was taken to hospital, where doctors treated him, clearing him of any serious trauma, but keeping him in for observation.

He'd only been on the field for 20 minutes, substituting Kevin Gameiro.

"I could hear the impact to his neck from the bench", Atletico manager Diego Simeone said after the game. "We are only anxious about Fernando's health at the moment".

The goalkeeper fluffed a goal kick that allowed Deportivo striker Florin Andone to nip in ahead of Atletico defender Jose Gimenez and slot home. The draw kept Deportivo one point above the relegation zone, and dropped Atletico 11 points behind leader Barcelona, which routed Sporting Gijon 6-1 on Wednesday.
