Pratt man shot by wanted felon remains in critical condition

A 19-year-old store clerk in Kansas who was shot by a murder suspect on the run from authorities Wednesday said he's lucky to be alive.

For the case in Kansas, the attorney general has now filed attempted first degree murder, one count of aggravated robbery, one count of theft and one count of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. Bond was set at $5 million and a first appearance was scheduled for March 6th in Pratt County district court.

Bailey says physical evidence was recovered in New Mexico tied to the MS case, including the vehicle that belonged to Deaton's slain girlfriend, Heather Robinson, and firearms.

Alex Deaton, 28, was arrested Wednesday in Kansas after a police chase and crash.

MS authorities have charged Deaton in the death last week of his girlfriend and the shooting death of another woman at a rural MS church.

Neshoba County Sheriff Tommy Waddell said he believes Deaton shot and killed 69-year-old Brenda Pinter, who had gone to clean Dixon Baptist Church south of Philadelphia. MS officials also consider him a suspect in the shooting death of a woman found dead at a rural church.

Also Friday, Deaton's family said in a statement that they are "in a state of disbelief" and are fully cooperating with law enforcement.

Police in Kansas say that a MS fugitive shot a convenience store clerk and stole an SUV in the town of Pratt while police were searching for him.

In between, authorities suspect 28-year-old Alex Deaton killed two people, shot three others and stole four vehicles.

MS authorities are charging a fugitive arrested Wednesday in Kansas with a second murder. He is also suspected of being involved in the death of a woman found fatally shot at her Neshoba County church on Thursday. His sister tells Wichita television station KSNW that her brother was able to call police and his mother after being wounded to tell them what happened.

Deaton's girlfriend, 30-year-old Heather Robinson, was found dead in her apartment last week.

A spokeswoman for Via Christi Hospital in Wichita, said on Wednesday the victim is in critical condition.

Police say Deaton stole a vehicle after shooting the clerk.

According to KHP Trooper Tod Hileman, on Wednesday at approximately 7:50 AM, troopers attempted to stop an eastbound black Cadillac vehicle on Interstate 70 near Dorrance in Russell County.

The KBI said there are still questions on how long Deaton will remain in Kansas custody.
