PwC is taking full ownership of the incredibly awkward mistake.
Similarly, at Sunday night's memorable Oscars, veteran actors Warren Beatty (aided by his Bonnie and Clyde co-star Faye Dunaway) ended up announcing the wrong victor for the award for Best Picture.
'We are now investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred'.
Horowitz flashed the card showing the winning movie to the audience.
In an epic flub that drew gasps of horror - and joy - at the Dolby Theatre here, actress Faye Dunaway mistakenly named La La Land the Best Picture at the 89th Academy Awards on Sunday, but in reality, Moonlight won the top prize.
"I actually heard the stage manager standing in front of me saying, 'No, no, no, that is not the movie".
So why did the wrong envelope end up in Beatty's hand?
In reading the victor for Best Picture, acting legends Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty mistakenly said the wrong film. "I said, 'What are they going to do now?' And then I saw him get onstage. And once again: congrats to 'Moonlight.' A truly handsome picture made by some even more lovely people". Damien Chazelle's musical might have cheered for Moonlight's Best Picture win on stage and wept silent tears backstage but there's no escaping Twitter, which is filled with hilarious tweets about La La Land's short-lived Oscar glory. The expansion will put "Moonlight" at its widest release, which previously had been 1,104 locations during the January 27-29 weekend following the film's eight Academy Award nominations.
The pair then stand off stage at opposite sides and hand envelopes to the respective presenters as each category is announced. Harvey misread the correct (admittedly confusingly laid out) envelope.
La La Land star Ryan Gosling could be seen apparently trying not to laugh during the mix-up, though the BBC's Martha Kearney says he had a "face like thunder" while waiting for a limo after the ceremony. The Oscars awarding Best Picture to the year's actual best picture is a rarity.
It is unknown why there was still a Best Actress duplicate available when Beatty walked on stage. For best picture, Mr. Beatty said he was passed a card with the name of Emma Stone for "La La Land" - the best-actress award she had already received earlier in the evening. They also added that they were now investigating "how this could have happened". Ali ended his acceptance speech by thanking his wife who gave birth to their daughter, Bari Najma Ali, just four days before.
La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz returned to the microphone after being told about the mix up and said "Moonlight won Best Picture" and insisting that "this is not a joke".
