President Trump speaks in Newport News

President Donald Trump gestures as he speaks to Navy and shipyard personnel aboard nuclear aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Va., Thursday, March 2, 2017. The event follows the president's proposal to add $54 billion to defense spending. "We have more coming". Ford-class aircraft carriers and carrier strike groups will provide the core capabilities of forward presence, deterrence, sea control, power projection, maritime security and humanitarian assistance.

Trump repeatedly promised to build up the nation's military over the 2016 presidential campaign.

During the president's address at the joint session of Congress, Trump said that he requested an end to current defense sequestrations. "Hampton Roads is going to get a very gold share of that whether it be military spending in general on our installations", said Claville, referring to the spending surge for DoD personnel and installations.

Trump continued saying that under his administration, USA military forces would be able to acquire more boats, ships and planes at lower costs. "If we don't make a good deal, we're not doing a good job", said Trump.

"Our republic will meet any challenge, defeat any danger, face any threat, and always seek true and lasting peace", Trump said.
