Jat Quota Agitation Comes To Delhi, Thousands Gather At Jantar Mantar

Agitating Jats in Haryana will stage a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi tomorrow in support of their various demands, including reservations in government jobs and educational institutes for the community. It's president Yashpal Mallik has threatened to launch a more serious stir if their demands are not met. Mallik told TOI after the protests, a memorandum of demand will be submitted to President Prana Mukherjee.

Jat protestors from Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Punjab participated in the day-long demonstration in central Delhi.

He said that the city would be shut down and that the supply of essential commodities would be cut off.

He added that their protest would continue till their demands are met.

Nearly 10,000 people from UP and Haryana have reached Delhi to demand quota in education, and government jobs under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. We will march up to the Parliament and if necessary, will court arrest too, ?

"Today we will apprise the government of our demands".

A similar agitation in Haryana a year ago had led to the death of 30 people and damage to property worth crores.

"Others who were injured during previous protest should be given compensation and the government should give a job to a family member of the deceased", the report quoted Malik as saying.

That date was later announced as March 20.

On Thursday afternoon, Special Commissioners from Delhi Police visited Jantar Mantar to ensure that the protest ends peacefully.

Malik further lashed out at Manohar Lal Khattar-led BJP government in Haryana for showing insensitivity towards their demands.

"It is for the government to come out with a solution, but the kind of attitude the Haryana government has shown, we don't feel it wants a solution".
