At least 11 killed in Ukraine coal mine blast

This has been reported by the press service of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service.

"All the miners have been brought to the surface", the authorities said.

The service said 34 miners had been at a depth of 550 metres when the explosion ripped through the mine at 12.46 local time (1046 GMT).

Officials said Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman and Energy Minister Igor Nasalyk immediately left for the site after hearing the news. They have rescued 20 miners who were initially reported as missing. The energy sector in Ukraine is now in a state of emergency.

Officials said Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko was being briefed on the situation and had declared a day of national mourning over the disaster. Most of Ukraine's coal comes from the rebel-held east.

The separatists in eastern Ukraine continued to supply coal to the government in Kyiv after their conflict against Ukrainian government forces began in April 2014.
