While Carryn was praised endlessly for her husband's accomplishments (SEAL Team 6 is best known for killing Osama bin Laden), there is some contention surrounding his death, as Ryan's father, Bill Owens, actually refused Trump's invitation to meet with him. My generals are the most respected we've had in many decades, I believe.
"I'm sorry, I don't want to see him, " Owens recalled telling the chaplain who informed him that the president was on his way from Washington, according to the Herald. He quoted Defense Secretary Jim Mattis defending the action, saying "Ryan was a part of a highly successful raid that generated large amounts of vital intelligence that will lead to many more victories in the future against our enemies".
"I haven't had the chance to speak with him directly about that, but I would imagine that he would be supportive of that", Sanders said of Trump. There's nothing worse. But again, this is something that they were looking at for a long time doing, and according to General Mattis, it was a very successful mission.
They've also pushed back against reports from NBC News citing military sources who say little information of value was recovered from the mission, and other news reports suggesting that higher-level targets were missed in the attack.
NBC News reported Monday, citing unnamed senior USA officials, that the raid had produced no "actionable intelligence".
However, the raid raised doubts about the months of detailed planning that went into the operation during the former President Barack Obama's administration and whether the right questions were raised before the mission was approved. "Now, all of a sudden we had to make this grand display?" William Owens has called for an investigation into the decision to launch the raid, and has told administration officials who are reluctant to look into the matter, "Don't hide behind my son's death".
'And they lost Ryan, ' the president added.
So Trump, the commander-in-chief who gave his approval for the mission, had nothing to do with it. "This was something they wanted to do", Trump said of his generals.
Carryn Owens was sitting in a special seat next to Ivanka Trump during the president's speech.
But Bill Owens made it clear he firmly supports investigations into the raid and that he's not pleased with the White House seemingly using his family's tragedy to avoid answering questions about it. On Jan. 25, then-National Security Adviser Michael Flynn briefed Trump, Spicer said.
