If they don't get a deal done can he be tagged again next year?
The old adage goes that Running Backs are only useful until they're 30.
There is so much to admire and even love about Charles, and it only starts with his Chiefs-record 7,260 career rushing yards and 5.5 yard-per-carry average that is the best in National Football League history among running backs.
Charles began by saying he had been asked to talk about courage but couldn't without "talking about fear".
And that's the real issue with Charles.
Charles, 30, was set to enter the past year of his contract, which came with a $7 million salary cap number.
That leaves Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dontari Poe out in the open market, which is a odd move.
New York Giants: This would be an interesting move for the Giants to make. "Jamaal has been one of the most prolific players in our organization's history, and I have an enormous amount of respect for what he has accomplished".
A lot of teams who believe they're close to making a deep playoff run - the Colts, Giants, Ravens, Eagles, Seahawks and perhaps the Raiders - could bid for Charles to come in on a team-friendly deal.
Berry's big payout comes after a monster season in which he recorded 62 tackles, and assisted in 15 more.
But that risk might be low due to Charles' injuries. Even if he was healthy, Mathews likely wouldn't be back, as the team saves $4 million be releasing him. Namely Tony Jefferson of the Arizona Cardinals and Jonathan Cyprien of the Jacksonville Jaguars, who both posted higher PFF grades than Berry in 2016 and will want to command similar money. Brilliant, in fact. He didn't just outrun his peers by gaining 5.45 yards per carry over the course of his nine seasons with the Chiefs. He had a long of just 19-yards.
Dalvin Cook: The Eagles could make a major splash by taking Florida State running back Dalvin Cook with their first-round pick.
With the Fantasy running back pool getting an influx of talent in the draft and a handful of running backs moving into good situations this offseason, Charles shouldn't be much of a priority. Taking Cook in the first round, however, would stop the Eagles from addressing a more serious need, like cornerback or receiver.
Philadelphia should instead focus on drafting a running back in a very deep draft class simply and build around the rookie and second-year back Smallwood. Peters, Sproles and othersSubscribe to the podcast on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Soundcloud or iHeartRadio.
