Finally, as Damon went to present an award on stage, Kimmel conducted the band to play the infamous Academy Awards wrap music.
At the tail end of the almost four-hour-long show, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway mistakenly named La La Land the victor of the night's biggest award, when Moonlight had actually won. The envelope Warren Beatty was holding said best actress. The accounting firm responsible for the integrity of the awards has taken responsibility for the error and apologized to all involved. The host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" appeared to be burying the hatchet with his longtime foe, but immediately turned the tables. "The plan is for me to end the show in the audience from a seat next to Matt Damon... and whatever confusion there was about who won, Matt Damon lost". "And Matt says, 'I think I heard the stage manager say they got the victor wrong.'". So you just kind of figure, well, the host will go onstage and clear this up. "And then I remembered, 'Oh!"
Three "La La Land" producers gave acceptance speeches before the error was corrected and "Moonlight" received the award.
Check out Kimmel's monologue from Monday night to get more behind-the-scenes secrets from Hollywood's biggest blunder night. Then Denzel Washington, sitting in the front row, got Kimmel's attention and shouted, "Barry!"
"What we know is Warren was confused, so he handed it to Faye and let her read the victor - in other words, Clyde threw Bonnie under the bus", Kimmel joked, referring to the acting legends' 1967 film, "Bonnie and Clyde".
As Kimmel explains, he had a very different ending in mind for the show. Doing this, Kimmel said, "will make America great again". There was also a tale behind the best actor victor: Casey Afleck, a star whose possible dark past in molesting and harassing women, surfaced again before the Oscars, setting off a debate on his art being greater than the flawed artist.
