Houston 'Hood On Lockdown After Officers Shot, One Suspect Killed

Two Houston police officers have been hospitalized after being shot by two suspected burglars shot Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. He does have a foot injury, but it's not life-threatening. The officer brought to Memorial Hermann Hospital, Ronny Cortez, a 24-year veteran with the Houston Police Department, was more seriously hurt. He was reportedly able to visit briefly with his wife, but a bullet is lodged close to his spine.

One suspect was killed at the scene.

One, who was shot in the leg and grazed in the back, was taken to Ben Taub Hospital.

Both officers were alert and talking when they arrived at the hospital.

The officers were injured around 12:30 p.m. after responding to a burglary in progress in the residential area the Beltway and West Bellfort.

Dozens of HPD officers, SWAT and K9 units swarmed Sterlingame Drive in Stafford, a community in Greater Houston. The officers returned fire and killed the suspect. About 1,800 nearby homes were on lockdown as the search for the other suspects continued. He says residents can resume their normal activities but urged them to report anything unusual to police.

Acevedo said officers are still searching for another person believed to be connected to the shooting.

Another neighbor who asked not to be named said he slept through the incident after returning from a trip but saw "an ocean of police" outside his home.
