"On behalf of my family and the entire Kansas City Chiefs team, I'd like to thank Jamaal Charles for his contributions and dedication over the last nine seasons", Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a release. However, the star defensive back is wholly uninterested in doing anything short-term.
At the end of the day, this is a good signing.
It all reinforced what the Chiefs believed about Berry and gave them the nudge this time around to give him the long-term contract that they wouldn't hand him past year.
With all of that in mind, let's take a look at what franchising Berry would mean for both him and the Chiefs in 2017, answering frequently asked questions about the subject. Are you psyched that Eric Berry is here to stay for another six years?
Berry is a highly popular figure in Kansas City and courageously won a battle with Hodgkin's disease. Last year, he only carried the ball 12 times and put up just 40 total rushing yards.
And it gives them some room to make some offensive moves.
The question of if the Chiefs will franchise tag Eric Berry and will Eric Berry sit out the upcoming year are no more. "And the organization. But I don't feel comfortable playing under the franchise tag this year". He wants a long-term deal and he wants to win. I want to play there. Berry is a leader on and off the field and has most of the leverage for this deal. Poe is a durable plug in the middle and missed just four games in five seasons for the Chiefs. NFL Media's Ian Rapoport initially reported Berry and the Chiefs were finalizing a deal. But the significance of this signing goes further - he's also a tremendous player and a key to Kansas City's Super Bowl aspirations, and he's well deserving of the "highest-paid safety" designation. "So I'm not getting my hopes up; I'm looking at it logically". There was no sense in agreeing to pay $6 million to a player the team was unsure about.
If Berry gets the tag and holds out, the Chiefs could trade him, but for the time being, we can presume Berry will not be an option for most anybody this offseason.
Eric Berry has proven to be one of the best safeties in the National Football League and one of the best Tennessee Volunteers-turned-pros in recent memory. If he hits free agency, he will receive some interest. The runner-ups for most paid are Tyrann Mathieu and Harrison Smith.
Sometimes sides agree on the amount of money in the contract, but not the language. Because the salary cap has gone up, so too has the cost of the player.
