Malaysian property developer Tiah got way more than he bargained for when he signed a licensing deal to use the Trump brand on the Trump International Hotel and Tower that he is opening on Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017 in Vancouver.
He says visitors don't have to stay at the Trump Tower to get the full Vancouver experience.
The hotel, the Trump Organization's first new worldwide property since president Trump's ascension to the White House, will have its grand opening with a 10:30 a.m. ribbon cutting.
The Trump brothers will be joined by Joo Kim Tiah, head of the Vancouver property development firm, the Holborn Group, who has overseen the project's construction funded by his Malaysia-based businessman father Tiah Thee Kian.
The building's more than 200 condominium units reportedly sold out previous year.
And despite the fact reporters weren't allowed to ask questions, that didn't stop one journalist from shouting over the crowd and asking if there were any hurt feelings due to the fact neither Mayor Gregor Robertson nor any Vancouver city council members were in attendance at the event.
"I did a lot of soul searching because people were attacking me for it", said Tiah.
"I wanted a brand that would get me a lot of attention so that the public would, in turn, be impressed with me knowing I am responsible for the product", Joo Kim told the Malaysian newspaper The Star in an interview previous year. "The people who ran the city were not happy with me".
As the opening ceremony took place Tuesday inside the gleaming 69-story tower, people carrying anti-Mr.
Diego Reyna pulled the stunt to show Trump that "he is benefiting from us, and that we are working hard on his projects and that we are not all criminals", he told CBC News, saying he'd "seen every race and every religion working in that building".
Sue Robertson, a retiree who lives in Vancouver, said the Trump brand is associated with "evil" and said a Trump tower "does not belong in a multicultural, fabulous handsome city".
A new hotel planned for Dallas is backed by investors from Turkey, Qatar and Kazakhstan, and the state-owned Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd is a tenant of Trump Tower in NY.
"Because it is a luxury property it is going to have a very high ratio of staff to customers because they expect that level of service", he said.
"We've had an unbelievable past year on so many fronts", said Eric Trump just hours before his father was set to address Congress in his first such address as President of the United States.
Tiah met Donald Jr. first, and said they found common ground in building careers at a family business. As of Tuesday night, that post had not been taken down. "That's so far from being true, it's laughable", Brent Toderian tweeted.
Located along an upscale six-lane downtown thoroughfare, the tower is the second-tallest in Vancouver and offers majestic mountain and ocean views.
"There would be severe legal implications", he said in a recent interview.
