Police said two officers were injured when one of their guns accidentally hit the ground and went off, but they are both expected to be OK.
The department's Twitter account stated the officers are being transported to the hospital.
One officer is at Memorial Hermann Hospital, the other officer was taken to Ben Taub hospital.
KHOU reports the officers were shot when they responded to a burglary in progress at a home the neighborhood near Beltway and West Bellford around 12:30 p.m. Another bullet grazed him in the back.
Portion of southwest Houston are under a shelter in place order as police search for a suspect on the run.
That area is on lockdown, and police are asking those residing in the surrounding area to lock their doors until the suspect is apprehended.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner told reporters Tuesday afternoon that one officer was shot multiple times and remains in critical condition.
