Haas unveils its VF-17 2017 F1 vehicle

Despite the fact that photos were leaked 24 hours earlier, the Haas team waited for the day to present the second auto of its short history in Formula 1. The team colors of black, grey, red and white remain the same, but the design used has also changed substantially.

"I think the pedal box is the same, but all the rest is very different from last year's vehicle", said Guenther Steiner, Haas team principal. "For 2017, if we can do a little bit better because our business model in F1 allows us to operate more efficiently, we might be able to move up a position or two". The aero is completely new, as are the tires, so we needed to have some built-in adjustability.

"Aesthetically, the vehicle has a more aggressive look". It is lighter and more aerodynamically efficient.

The new vehicle is Haas' second fully bespoke auto and their first with some relevant experience behind them after their debut 2016. As chairman for the team, Gene Haas added the name, along with f1 last season to mean simply: "Very first one". The VF-17 was revealed and hit the track for a few laps during a filming day for the U.S. squad.

However, despite this, the Dane felt it was a typical day of testing, and admitted that the auto felt nice to drive, and will continue his testing programme on Tuesday before he hands over the vehicle to team-mate Romain Grosjean for the final two days of the test. Twenty-nine points were scored by the VF-16 during Haas F1 Team's inaugural season, the largest points haul of any new Formula One team in this millennium. That was the initial concept - to convince people of our ability to do things others can't, and I think that translates into being a machine tool builder. The first CNC machine manufactured by Haas Automation was the VF-1 in 1988.

The term "VF" remains on the vehicle, stemming from the word "vertical", which is a designation term for a vertical mill.
