Only in May previous year, another fire had broken out in the fourth floor of the same building.
Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, home to many leading newspapers of India, also has a passport office and the Nehru Doll Museum. However, as the blaze spread, 22 more fire-tenders were rushed to the spot. The call was received at around 4.45 pm, said a fire official. "Eighteen fire tenders battled the fire on the first and second floors of the building near ITO office", a Delhi Fire officer told IANS.
Firemen said that the building could collapse as the fire has spread on all the floors.
Officials from the Delhi Fire Services said the entire building was evacuated immediately and no one was injured. We didn't think the fire would get this bad.
While the fire department said there were no casualties, an official with the Bennett Coleman and Co Ltd said they were yet to assess the damage. While the exact trigger is yet to be probed, fire fighters suspected that the blaze started in the server room located on the first floor. "Eight fire engines will work through the night to control the fire smouldering in burnt down portions of the building", the officer said.
