In an emotional acceptance speech, Ali paid tribute to "my teachers, my professors" as well as the film's director Barry Jenkins, producer Adele Romanski and Tarell Alvin McCraney, whose play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue was the basis of the film. I grew up in poverty.
Overall, La La Land won six awards on the night and Viola Davis also made history at the Oscar as she became the first black woman to complete "Triple Crown Of Acting" by winning an Oscar, a Tony and an Emmy.
Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal also criticised the immigration policy, saying, "As Mexican, Latin-American migrant worker and as a human being I am against any kind of wall that wants to separate us".
"I'm going to try not to cry now (and) be cheesy". I just wanted to be good at something. I can't believe my life. "We just had our daughter 4 days ago". "I have so many people to thank who have gotten me here... any one of them [the cast] could be up here now holding this trophy". "I became an artiste, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life", she said.
Ali said that the announcement "threw me a bit". "I want to thank my wife who in her third trimester during awards season", he said.
Stars including Naomie Harris, Taraji P. Henson, Charlize Theron and Jeff Bridges could be seen in the crowd singing along as he moved into the crowd to sing Lovely Day by Bill Withers as he danced with his wife Jessica Biel.
But away from the big screen, Viola is best known for playing feisty lawyer Annalise Keating in "How To Get Away With Murder" and thinks she and her character are similar in their response to success. "I feel like you're ignoring all the white celebrities", Kimmel says, awkwardly laughing.
Congratulations, Davis. Now excuse us while we go sob in a corner over your lovely words.
