The 89th Annual Academy Awards were held Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and aired on ABC. The milestone comes after President Donald Trump implemented his executive ban, according to which Muslims from seven predominantly Islamic countries had their entry barred from the United States. You can check out his full speech below.
Amatus Sami-Karim may be home tending to her newborn baby, but Mahershala Ali's wife is one of the biggest winners on Academy Awards night after her husband's groundbreaking win. Thank you the Academy, I really appreciate this.
When asked how the Moonlight actor, who plays a compassionate drug dealer, is juggling awards season with his growing family, Ali explained the two are 'polar opposite experiences'. Thank you Barry Jenkins... And I am so blessed to have had this opportunity. We're so glad he made the switch, too, because Moonlight was incredible and he was so friggin' good as Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes in Luke Cage.
One of the most memorable moments of the Oscars came when Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty took the stage to announce the victor for best picture. "It's unbelievable to walk away a year and a half after doing this project and have Oscar awards as a result", he told Robach. Mahershala converted to Islam at a young age and changed his surname from Gilmore to Ali. It's about these characters, (and) you are in service to these stories and these characters. "I'm not one to reveal a bunch of things about my personal life". I just didn't want to go up there and take something from somebody. I had so many wonderful teachers. "This is also for others who are the victims of violence, police brutality and racially motivated violence, this is for them and I'm honoured to accept it on all of their behalves". The couple welcomed their first child Bari just four days before the award ceremony.
