Happy birthday, Chandler Jones.
As expected, the Cardinals have placed the franchise tag on Jones, Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com reports.
The Cardinals didn't make it a secret that they weren't going to let Jones go anywhere. Over the past two seasons, Jones has 23.5 sacks, the third most in the National Football League in that span. Dating back to his second National Football League season in 2013, his 13 multi-sack games are tied for the second-most in the NFL.
Coach Bruce Arians was the first to announce the team's intentions at his postseason wrap-up press conference.
Since Jan. 2, the day after the Cardinals' season ended, the team has said they would franchise Jones if a long-term deal couldn't be agreed upon.
In his first season with the Cardinals in 2016, Jones started all 16 games at linebacker and had 11 sacks, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 15 tackles for loss and was a Pro Bowl alternate.
The Arizona Cardinals now have Chandler Jones locked under contract for the franchise tag through July 15, 2017. Even though Jones' contract was set to expire at the end of the 2016 season, the Cardinals moved forward with the deal hoping Jones would help transform Arizona's pass rush.
Jones had 11 sacks last season, a year after he had a career-high 12.5 with New England in 2015. Jones has recorded at least 6.0 sacks in all five seasons he's played.
"He's a great pass rusher", Bidwill said on Arizona Sports earlier this month.
