US Customs and Border Patrol Plan to Award Contracts for Border Wall

The federal government is following through on President Donald Trump's pledge to build a wall along the US-Mexico Border. But, they did not give an exact estimate of when they'll submit their report.

"The wall is getting designed right now", Trump said in early February. But we will not lower standards, and we will not lower training.

The number of CBP agents doubled during the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, from 10,000 to 21,000. New agents were rushed through training and into the field, some without completed background checks.

In the past, CBP has also had a problem retaining Border Patrol agents. Moran says it will be hard but not impossible to find 5,000 new agents.

One of the most burdensome steps to becoming an agent is passing a rigorous - and some say flawed and overly burdensome - polygraph exam that two out of three applicants fail.

Jim Wong, who was Deputy Assistant Commissioner of CBP's Office of Internal Affairs from 2009 to 2011, said money might be better spent on other department needs. They included serious felony crimes, active involvement in smuggling activities and several confirmed infiltrators who actually were employed by drug trafficking organizations who had been directed to seek out positions within Customs and Border Protection to advance ongoing criminal conspiracies, essentially be spies in our midst. "A lot of people say, oh, oh, Trump was only kidding with the wall".

"We believe that what is effective is continued cooperation and working together", Jose said, adding that the expanded wall would impact the way they live, as its members "cross the border daily for just basic necessities. And you have to act now, because there's only going to be 800 million of these".
