Raonic defeats Edmund to reach Delray Beach semis

The World No.49 appeared to be closing in on his first Top 10 win but Raonic turned up his serve in the final two sets.

Del Potro fought off a set point to force the tiebreaker and after securing the first set seized a 3-1 lead in the second only to again give back a service break.

The 2011 champion, playing in just his second match of the season, won 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 6-3 against the 24-year-old to set up a clash with Sam Querrey.

Standing in the way of Raonic and a berth in the final is seventh seed Del Potro.

Raonic, who is ranked fourth in the world, will next face the victor of a later match between Argentinian seventh seed Juan Martin Del Potro and defending champion Sam Querrey of the United States.

"It's going to be a big chance for me", said del Potro. The second set was lightning fast, they lost 9 points on return in total but this time it was Raonic who got the most from his return, breaking in game 8 after a costly double fault from Edmund and that was all that he needed to bring the set home in the following game. Raonic's confidence grew and Edmund's level declined after that.

He will face Raonic for the third time.

On the other half of the draw, Jack Sock moved into the semifinals by beating Steve Johnson 6-4, 7-6 (4) in an all-American matchup.

Young advanced by walkover when Belgian Steve Darcis pulled out to attend to family matters.

The third-seeded Sock is the only player remaining in the hard-court event who has not dropped a set as he seeks his second title of 2017, third of his career.
