As the award show approaches, it may be time to question just who decides on the films that are known and loved.
Kimmel has indicated he's unsure how large a role politics will play in his routine at the 89 annual awards show.
Esparza is a former sportsbook director for companies in Las Vegas, but also covers entertainment odds for online betting site Doc's Sports. Excluding 2012, the last time a director didn't win the Oscar after winning the DGAA was in 2002. We expect that this one will be no different.
The question of the evening isn't so much whether Damien Chazelle's musical love letter to cinema will take home Best Picture, but how much hardware it'll take with it?
WHO WILL WIN: "La La Land".
Esparza used critical darling La La Land as an example. "I hate to use the word "lock" on anything, but La La Land has a lot of hype". It feels like he could have won at least 5 more times but the Academy really made him sweat it out. "We protect the house but prepare ourselves for what's most likely to win".
Moviefone's editors are checking off their choices for who will - and should - win in all the major categories. In other words, winning the Oscar for best picture would be the cherry on top of a very predictable sundae. Those who use the mathematical model predict that "La La Land" will take the Oscar home. And peripheral factors help it rise above its rivals. "Arrival is so far down because of pressure from other films, and there's a backlash against Hacksaw Ridge because of Mel Gibson", he said. Though the LAPD won't say this year how many officers they have deployed for the event, it is expected to be about 500, the number that secured the awards zone in 2016.
But, as some of the nominees in this video show, Best Picture winners can often surprise you.
"I think what makes up a good movie is the story behind it", Leady said.
Chazelle now stands at a -3000 bet, a huge margin in any category. No matter how long the list, someone will be overlooked.
By the way, while John is one of La La Land's executive producers, he won't actually win an Oscar if it wins Best Picture.
The Oscars were hosted in a variety of venues before landing at the Dolby Theatre.
Anytime Meryl Streep is up for a Best Actress award, you should usually take notice... except for this year. And the nominees for Best Director are. "There could be an upset". This is Emma Stone's to lose, and what a treat that will be for La La Land fans.
Those are just the main categories, but there are 24 other announced categories to choose from. "That's why Oscar betting is so popular".
Zero of the acting nominees this year were nominated last year. "And it talks to us whether we like it or not and that's what that song is about, being 16 and the distance between you and your dreams, it seeming impossible but listening to that voice anyway", he said.
