Several people were feared trapped as a major fire broke out in a multi-storey luxury hotel in east China's Jiangxi Province on Saturday, state-run news agency Xinhua said. Several others have reportedly been trapped inside the hotel, firefighters said.
Three of 16 people rushed to hospitals died while in care, and firefighters found seven bodies amid the hotel debris.
About 10 fire tenders were dousing the flames when reports last came in.
"Initial investigations found the fire was caused by cutting of decoration materials and further investigation is under way", the report said. More than 10 construction workers were working on the second floor at the time.
A man who jumped from the second floor to escape the fire suffered severely injured.
The four-storey hotel has been surrounded by fire engines and ambulances.
The hotel is adjacent to a 24-story apartment building where more than 260 residents have been evacuated.
