Kings agree to trade All-Star DeMarcus Cousins to Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans' newest All-Star maintained Wednesday that he liked Sacramento and initially wasn't happy about being traded Sunday night, but added he'd become frustrated waiting through six-plus losing seasons for the Kings to add more elite players.

"Most likely we would get less because I had a better deal two days ago", Divac shared Monday. Of course it's going to be a process, but I believe the potential is there. He's a lot closer to his home and his family in Mobile, Ala.

Consider the usage rates of both players: entering Thursday, Cousins ranks second in the National Basketball Association in usage rate at 37.5 percent, while Davis is sixth at 32.5 percent.

Cousins said he was disappointed initially when he learned of the trade. It's very unexpected, but I'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. I'm looking forward to it. "Just get (Cousins) the ball and let him go to work", Holiday said. He's on a one-year deal, so the Bulls could trade for him as a rental or treat it as a low-risk tryout to see if he fits with the team long-term.

"Come on to Sacramento", Cousins said. "Even though I'm gone it'll still be the same".

Pelicans general manager Dell Demps previous' attempts to provide Davis a requisite supporting cast has been under increasing scrutiny as losses have mounted - New Orleans is 23-34, 2 + games out of the final playoff spot in the West with 25 games left. Both Cousins and Davis generate FanDuel points in similar ways, and with both on the court on the same time, they'll be competing for the same rebounds and will be forced to share touches in the frontcourt.

Cousins, who has clashed with all manner of Kings personnel both past and present since being drafted by the club in 2010, apparently set fire to the last straw earlier this winter in daring to offend the sensibilities of Kings owner Vivek Ranadive's other favorite club, the Golden State Warriors, with a post-win outburst in the team owner's presence. Cousins would be the fire.

Davis is known across the league as one of the premier defenders having lead the league in blocks twice before, as well as averaging over a steal and two blocks for his career. His next tech will trigger a one-game suspension. But for two polar-opposite Kentucky big men, lost on paths leading nowhere fast, blazing a new, unlikely trail together may be their way to find the success they have been searching for. "It does take time".

While we're not going to say Cousins was a model citizen, character and culture starts at the top. I think this is a special thing we're forming right now.

Cousins will play for New Orleans for the first time on Thursday night, when the Pelicans host the Houston Rockets. It won't be so easy replacing Cousins' 27.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game, even if the Kings won't miss his NBA-leading 17 technical fouls.

The surprise deal went down while the All-Star Game in New Orleans was playing out on February 19, according to ESPN.
