CHP officer dies after crashing into pole during Sacramento pursuit

A Sacramento California Highway Patrol Officer has died after hitting a pole during a pursuit. He leaves behind a wife and children. Sacramento television station KCRA reports Officer Lucas Chellew was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Authorities say Chellew was chasing a suspect who was on a motorcycle in South Sacramento on Wednesday when a collision occurred and Chellew lost control of his motorcycle.

Charles Chellew, the fallen officer's father and a former captain and commander of the North Sacramento CHP area office, and Hanna Chellew, the 31-year-old's younger sister who also served as a CHP officer, also attended. "Officer Chellew epitomized what a CHP officer should always be - a dedicated, selfless public servant".

"Officer Chellew now joins a distinguished and cherished group of men and women whose names adorn a memorial fountain at the center of the CHP Academy".

A silver vehicle crossed in front of Chellew's motorcycle, and the officer tried to avoid the auto but collided with its ride side, a CHP news release stated, according to the Sacramento Bee. "Officer Chellew's great courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten".

A bell ringing ceremony will be held at the CHP Academy at 10 a.m. on Thursday. CHP will release more details as they become available.

Nicasio Valley Road at a high rate of speed, the CHP said.
