BYU, Tennessee agree to face each other in 2019, 2023

BYU football has scheduled matchups with one of the most successful programs in college football - and with an FCS opponent.

The Vols have scheduled a home and home series with BYU that will be four years apart.

The Cougars also announced a game against Idaho State on Thursday, which will be played November 16, 2019, in Provo. September 14's nonconference game at Utah is the only other non-Big Sky game now on the slate.

The Volunteers and Cougars are scheduled to meet at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville on September 7, 2019 and then at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah on either September 1 or 2, 2023. The two schools have never met in football.

The University of Tennessee will meet BYU on the football field for the first time.

"I like this regional game with Idaho State", BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe said in a press release. "When the opportunity to play a series with Tennessee presented itself, we didn't blink".

Tennessee's marquee non-league games for the next two seasons are neutral site contests against Georgia Tech (Atlanta) in 2017 and West Virginia (Charlotte) in 2018, and there's also a two-game set with Pittsburgh slated for 2021 and 2022. The Cougars, an FBS Independent, also announced Thursday that they will play Idaho State on November 16, 2019. BYU owns a 5-0 record in the series. Neyland Stadium is the fourth-largest stadium in the country - holding more than 102,000 people. "We look forward to hosting Idaho State at LaVell Edwards Stadium in 2019".

Tennessee was founded in 1794 and began playing football in 1891.

The BYU-Tennessee game completes the Volunteers' 2019 nonconference scheduling.

There are three games yet to be announced.
