How Kerala's fearless firemen prevented a major tragedy at Mittayitheruvu

Kozhikode: A huge fire broke out at a textile shop on Sweetmeat Street (SM Street) in Kozhikode on Wednesday. As the fearless men fought to bring the fire under control, these cylinders were noticed, sending alarm signals to people present at the street. No casualties have been reported in the fire. More than 15 fire force units were employed to extinguish the fire.

The presence of five LPG cylinders in the the building engulfed by fire created panic situation for long time.

The last incident in June 2016 was a minor mishap, where a fire broke out in a textile shop. The timely effort of the fire and rescue service officials averted a major mishap as they managed to remove the cylinders, risking their own lives.

Around 14 fire engines were at the spot and fire personnel were using water and foam to douse the flames.

The three-storeyed shop, Modern Textiles, located near Radha Theatre, was gutted in the blaze, which also spread to some nearby shops, on either side of the building as well as in its rear portion, which is a maze of shops selling textiles, footwear, plastic products and such items.

Getting intimation from the employees, police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot and launched rescue operation.

The fire was finally brought under control by mid-afternoon.

Reports say that a gas cyclinder blast may have led to the fire.
