Carrick, Mhkitaryan to miss EFL cup final

Manchester United are expected to be without key duo Michael Carrick and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for this weekend's EFL Cup final against Southampton according to manager Jose Mourinho.

Mkhitaryan scored the only goal in United's Europa League second leg victory over Saint-Etienne on Wednesday night (22 February) but had to be withdrawn midway through the first half with a hamstring injury, while Carrick seemed to suffer a calf problem during the second period.

The victor will then be selected at random and their details will be then sent on to Art of Football for delivery.

"Imagine we play Chelsea on the Monday and then we have to go to a second leg in the Europa League in Russian Federation, in Turkey, in Greece".

"They are important players for us and not having them for the final is complicated".

"I don't say they will definitely miss out, I just say what I feel". The stadium was good, the stadium was lovely, the pitch was good, the crowd was fantastic.

"Honestly, I don't think so", Mourinho admitted to manutd.com.

The downside for United is that their impressive form has come too late in regard to a title challenge, with Chelsea sitting at the top, 12 points above the North-West outfit with 13 games left to play. I can not play against Chelsea with the U21s like Manchester City did past year.

"I can not do that, we are Man United, we can not do that". I don't do that to the FA Cup because the FA Cup is not guilty of these decisions.

"So what is going to happen is an accumulation of matches, people playing a lot of matches".

Mourinho told BT Sport he had no regrets over picking a strong side at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard despite the setbacks, but he is not hopeful over Mkhitaryan and Carrick's prospects.
