Border Security Force on Tuesday claimed to killed a militant and recovered an assault rifle from his possession in Keri sector of Rajouri district in Jammu region. The encounter was carried out by the 163 Battalion of BSF during wee hours of Tuesday.
"Last (Monday) midnight, alert BSF troops deployed at the fence of LoC in Keri sector observed a suspicious movement by a group of 3-4 militants".
However, two terrorists managed to flee the spot amid the hail of gunfire. When they realised that they had been spotted, the militants opened fire with automatic weapons and also launched UBGL grenades on the BSF troops.
"As the militants approached the LoC fence, one of them tried to negotiate it to make way for infiltration to this side". An exchange of fire followed for about 30 minutes, during which one militant was killed.
Other terrorists escaped taking advantage of undulating hilly terrain and jungle cover.
The tunnel was recovered during searches at Ramgarh sector in Samba.
The BSF has successfully foiled 11 infiltration bids on International Border (IB) and 15 on Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu region since November a year ago, he said.
Meanwhile, Army has seized a large quantity of arms and ammunition from the area in the search operation following the infiltration bid.
