Snap Inc. will start offering the popular Spectacles online beginning Monday. For now, the shipping duration for these Spectacles on the website is two to three weeks.
Snapchat Spectacles have, until now, been impossible to find unless you hunt down its traveling vending machine. Speaking of the vending machines Snap referred to as "Snapbots", they are now taking a short break, according to a Snap spokesperson. Users were only able to purchase them through Snapbots, which appeared in various locations throughout the U.S.
New gadgets that offer more ways to interact with Snapchat could help attract new users and get existing users to spend more time on the app.
Many investors remained unconvinced by Snap's claim that it is more valuable than Facebook Inc based on revenue at the time of its IPO in 2012. These vending machines will not be deployed temporarily to make most of the online push of the product, but you can expect them to be back after a short period of hibernation. Snap's filing suggests it plans to boost its Spectacles-related production and operating costs, as well as invest in inventory, marketing, distribution and product innovation. The recorded video by Spectacles can also be shared as a Snap story by users.
We've seen Snap Inc.'s insane new Spectacles before thanks to vending machines that popped up in California and NYC, but it looks like the company is opening sales to practically everyone who has internet access.
The spokesperson said, "As Evan [Spiegel, co-founder] shared in his interview with the WSJ, when we launched, the idea was: 'We're going to take a slow approach to rolling them out, ' says Spiegel". Making them available online to everyone in the USA significantly broadens their distribution, and makes them accessible to folks who were unable to buy them at Snapbot locations. Then, you can virtually try them on onscreen.
