Mugabe reluctantly sided with his wife's unusual wishes in his inaudible birthday interview emphasising that he was not expecting to handover power to anyone in the ruling Zanu PF party.
Mnangagwa is being widely touted as the president's heir apparent but Mr. Mugabe's latest remarks appear to be shutting him out of the Zimbabwean leader's succession race.
Zimbabwe's President Mugabe has said his Zanu-PF party wants him to stand again for elections in 2018.
These are not the words of a leader who has any intention of stepping down any time soon.
"The majority of the people feel that there is no replacement, successor who to them is acceptable, as acceptable as I am", he told state media.
Mugabe's birthday party will be held next Saturday in the Matopos, near Bulawayo. "Mr. Trump might even re-look the sanctions on Zimbabwe".
Analysts say recent statements by his wife, however, might be more telling as Mugabe shows signs of slowing down.
Last year, the celebrations were held at Great Zimbabwe Monuments in Masvingo. During the interview, Mugabe said he didn't want U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to win. He and his party say the economy has been undermined by western powers.
Mr Mugabe also repeated his pledge to stand in elections in 2018. "We have more important things to do, to address the concerns of the people, to deliver on the expectations of voters".
It was established in 1986, to encourage Zimbabweans, particularly the youths, to emulate President Mugabe and his revolutionary ideas and selfless policies.
In the meantime, Mugabe's ruling Zanu-PF party has remained divided along factional lines over the years. Among his failures, said the demonstrators, were his mishandling of the economy, a dire shortage of US dollars, the main currency used in Zimbabwe, and the $800,000 reportedly spent on his lavish 92nd birthday celebrations, when giant cakes were served in a drought-stricken area suffering food shortages.
