Pelicans acquiring Cousins from Kings in multi-player deal

The Kings had repeatedly said they would not trade Cousins.

DeMarcus Cousins is on his way out of Sacramento - and right into an All-Star frontcourt pairing with Anthony Davis.

In a trade that will send the struggling Buddy Hield, the constantly injured Tyreke Evans, the Pelicans 2017 first round pick and a future second-round pick to Sacramento for a top 10 player in DeMarcus Cousins, the Pelicans might have just saved themselves years of being the laughing stock of the National Basketball Association by creating what might be the greatest front court in National Basketball Association history.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trade is not official and has not been announced by either team. Sacramento could have given Cousins a supermax long-term deal that would have paid him well over $200 million. The three players that the Kings received for Cousins can't match those stats with their season averages added together.

"If I'm blessed enough to have a job here, absolutely", Cousins said. "If that's what happens". Cousins and Anthony Davis are among the most talented, versatile big men in the league and could create a long, tall, nightmarish tandem of scoring, floor-spacing, and rim protection for opponents. But he is due to become a free agent in 2018 unless the Pelicans can sign him to an All-Star caliber extension.

New Orleans isn't guaranteed to re-sign Cousins either.

Cousins is a bit of a hothead - he already has 17 technical fouls this season - but a change of scenery may be exactly what "Boogie" needs.

The reported trade comes at a convenient time for Cousins, as the three-time All-Star now won't even need to travel for his next game. "Of course, DeMarcus is an elite player in this league", Davis answered.

It's back to rebuilding for the Sacramento Kings, who will likely end up back in the top 10 of the NBA Draft lottery - which is what was needed in order for them to keep their pick this season. Evans won Rookie of the Year for the 2009-2010 season when he averaged 20.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.8 assists.

Cousins has averaged 27.8 points and 10.7 rebounds per game this season.
