Student rammed hotel window before fatal fall

One fraternity member who was also in New Orleans says that Whaley died as a result of a 'freak accident, ' according to the Hattiesburg American.

Asked how Whaley came to fall through a closed window and whether roughhousing was involved, police spokesman Dawne Massey wrote in an email that the police department "is still collecting witness statements".

According to Rouse, Whaley's preliminary cause of death has been classified as 'blunt force injuries.' Whaley's final cause of death is now under investigation and is pending toxicology test results.

"We are still trying to figure out exactly what happened, but our understanding is that he alone broke out the window and then fell out of it", NOPD 8th District Commander Nick Gernon said.

Cole Whaley's funeral will be held in Spanish Fort, Alabama at the Sanctuary of Spanish Fort United Methodist Church.

He was in New Orleans for a Pi Kappa Phi fraternity function.

A report from the Orleans Parish Coroner's office showed that Whaley died on Saturday (Feb. 11), from blunt force injuries after falling through a closed window from the 11th story of the DoubleTree Hotel on Canal Street in New Orleans.

An autopsy shows Waley's injuries included "multiple skull fractures and subdural hemorrhage", the coroner said in a statement.

WDAM 7 reached out to the Pi Kappa Phi national office.

A message left with the Doubletree hotel management was not immediately returned. The well-being of our guests and team members remain our top priority.

The university said in a statement its community was mourning Whaley's death.

"The University was informed Saturday morning of the death of one of our students, Cole Whaley", said Dr. Eddie Holloway, Dean of Students.
