"These questions must be asked by independent and unbiased law enforcement officers". They must be answered truthfully by administration officials.
That must be true for every single employee of the Trump administration, from assistants citing in cramped cubicles to the man occupying the Oval Office.
"Any investigation headed, directed by, or influenced by the Attorney General will be jaundiced from the very start". What was the extent of his conversations and contacts withRussiaa? Late Tuesday, The New York Times reported that USA agencies had intercepted phone calls past year between Russian intelligence officials and members of Trump's 2016 campaign team.
Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, didn't rule out an independent probe but said he and other lawmakers "need to find out a lot of basic information" first about Flynn's communications and the alleged contacts involving Trump's campaign. As soon as the administration found out, why did they act only when they were caught misleading the media? These are just a few of the questions that need to be answered. "Every one of these questions should be applied to all them as well".
Sen. Sherrod Brown of OH joined 10 other Senate Democrats today in urging U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions to name a special independent counsel to investigate "possible illegal communications" between former White House National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and Russian officials before President Donald Trump was inaugurated. "What I am calling for is an independent investigation with executive authority to pursue potential criminal actions".
But Republicans continued to brush off demands from Democrats for a Watergate-style probe, insisting investigations underway by the House and Senate intelligence committees are adequate. "Department of Justice regulations specifically prohibit individuals with political ties to the subjects of an investigation from leading that investigation", Schumer said. I want to read you the regulations from DOJ website. Are there people in the Justice Department, career people, who could do an independent investigation? "Personal relationship means a close and substantial connection of the type normally viewed as likely to induce partiality".
Sessions did, however, say he would recuse himself from any investigations related to Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server or any matters regarding the Clinton Foundation, given that he had previously made critical comments that "could place my objectivity in question".
"Sessions must follow Department of Justice guidance and recuse himself", Schumer said at a Wednesday news conference accompanied by members of the Senate Democratic Caucus. "What I'm trying to do is separate the things that are easy political hits from the substance that we need to deal with".
