Michael Flynn's security clearance suspended by Defense Intelligence Agency

Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner of Colorado agree that Michael Flynn was right to resign his post as national security adviser after it was revealed that Flynn spoke with a Russian ambassador about USA sanctions on Russia and later lied about it.

"The president is evaluating the situation", White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Monday.

The official said they weren't sure whether the intercepted phone call - where Flynn reportedly talked with the ambassador about sanctions - was based on Federal Bureau of Investigation intelligence or NSA intercepts, or whether the call between Flynn and the Russian Ambassador was collected under a FISA warrant.

Republicans splintered over whether to aggressively investigate the White House's dealings with Russian Federation, but Democrats are pushing for a independent review to assess whether Flynn, who resigned Monday, was acting alone or at the direction of others.

A New York Times report claims that members of Trump's campaign and outside associates had "repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials" in the year before the election.

This is a developing story. It's like, "But why wouldn't they discuss sanctions?"

Of course, this statement was in direct contradiction to a statement made shortly before that by Kellyanne Conway during an interview with MSNBC in which she said that Flynn had the "full confidence of the president". "He's speaking to the vice president relative to the conversation the vice president had with General Flynn, and also speaking to various other people about what he considers the single most important subject there is: our national security".

"Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President Elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian Ambassador", Flynn wrote.

The FBI's discovery is just part of its quest to discover the extent to which the Trump team communicated with Russian officials previous year.

And mavericky patriot Senator John McCain is dialing back his call for an independent investigation of Russia's hacking into the emails of Trump's Democratic opponents during the campaign, seeing as how Senator Mitch McConnell, always a profile in courage, doesn't want to go that route.

"Really that's a question for the president", said Sebastian Gorka, the president's deputy assistant on national security, when asked about it on NPR radio early Monday (Feb 13).

Flynn's ties to Moscow add to Trump's troubling embrace of Russian Federation and Putin. At the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, he also called for Hillary Clinton to be locked up.

In an angry fusillade of early-morning tweets, Mr Trump said: "The real scandal here is that classified information is illegally given out by "intelligence" like candy".

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he would not retaliate against the new sanctions.

Several others who are or who been close to Trump also have connections to Russian Federation.

Among them: Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager, who resigned in August amid questions about his alleged ties to pro-Russia forces in Ukraine; Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Exxon Mobil's former chief executive, who was awarded the Order of Friendship by Putin in 2013, one of Russia's highest honors to foreign citizens; and Wilbur Ross, Trump's Commerce secretary nominee, who reportedly was a business partner with a Russian oligarch.
