Problems keep piling up for Donald Trump's administration

A senior Trump administration official said before Flynn's resignation that the White House was aware of the matter, adding that "we've been working on this for weeks".

As Charles Krauthammer said last night, it was quote, "Perfectly reasonable for him to do so".

Flynn was sacked from his role as the director of Defense Intelligence Agency in 2014 by the Obama administration over claims he was a poor manager.

Democrats, critical of Mr. Trump's overtures to Russian Federation have seized the opportunity to attack the administration. As Ambassador Haley said at the time, to quote, "Dire situation in eastern Ukraine is one that demands clear and strong condemnation of Russian actions". "He knew he became a lightning rod, and he made that decision", she said. However, no national security adviser in the 64 years that the position has existed has vacated the office after just 24 days.

This should put even more pressure on Congress to create a select committee to investigate Trump's Russian Federation connections.

Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican who has previously backed the proposal for a select committee to investigate Russia's involvement in the election, said it is too early to say whether an independent commission should also investigate Mr. Flynn.

U.S. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer called for an investigation of potential criminal violations surrounding the resignation of Flynn.

"We were shocked and dismayed to learn this evening of reports that three weeks ago, USA law enforcement officials warned the White House Counsel that General Flynn had provided false information to the public about his communications with the Russian government, but that the Trump Administration apparently did nothing about it", they said.

The FBI has wide legal authority to eavesdrop on the conversations of foreign intelligence targets, including diplomats, inside the U.S.

Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway also tried to distance the administration from Flynn on Tuesday morning, saying on TODAY that he was at fault after providing incomplete information and not being able to recall what occurred on his phone calls.

While North Carolina Sen.

"What's at the core of this is an effort by some in the intelligence community to upend any positive relationship between the US and Russia", Kucinich said. Ron Wyden said he planned to push to make the findings and hearings public.

A few days ago President Trump denied any knowledge of the issue with Flynn, only for his Press Secretary, Sean Spicer to offer new clarification: "We've been reviewing and evaluating this issue with respect to General Flynn on a daily basis for a few weeks, trying to ascertain the truth".

"It is leaks", Spicer said.
