The Senate easily confirmed Dr. David Shulkin on Monday night to lead the Department of Veterans Affairs in a rare bipartisan show of support. "During his confirmation hearing, Dr. Shulkin promised greater accountability, improved access, responsiveness and expanded access within his department". Dr. Shulkin's expertise helped him guide VA through one of its most hard periods, and I am confident that we will be able to continue working together to improve VA services from mental health care to toxic exposure treatments.
"We are eager to work with Secretary Shulkin on making VA as great as the people it serves". He was previously the VA undersecretary of health.
"The department has failed veterans for too long", Caldwell wrote.
Shulkin is one of just a handful of holdovers from the Obama administration.
Shulkin was among the last Cabinet secretaries named by Trump, who reportedly offered the job to several other health executives first. He still occasionally saw patients over the past two years while running the VA's health administration, which has almost 9 million patients.
He also deflected concerns the VA would become privatized in the Trump administration, saying that would not happen "under my watch".
